Padma Shri Dadi Pudumjee at Kebab Bistro

By In Info related to Parsees

It was a proud moment for Kebab Bistro one Friday evening, when one of our favorite patron – Mrs. Nargish Khambhatta, the Principal of Gems Modern Academy called us to make a table booking for Padmashri Dadi D Pudumjee and his troupe for a Parsi meal at Kebab Bistro.

For those who may not be very familiar, Mr. Dadi Pudumjee is a Parsi from Poona, who is now settled in Delhi. He is a leading puppeteer and runs his work through the Ishara Puppet Theatre Trust in India.

Padma Shree Dadi PudumjeeHe has worked globally with several different forms of puppet and has taught puppetry for many years in Sweden and the West.
He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1992 and is the President of UNIMA* and past member of the General Council of the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
His work in this area has won him the coveted tittle of Padma Shree from the Government of India.

Padmashri Dadi D Pudumjee was in the UAE for over a month since December 2015, to conduct a workshop for puppetry for the students of Gems Modern Academy and facilitate their annual school production at the Sunny Varkey Centre for Performing Arts.

To watch over a hundred  students, with no experience in this area to perform a show of this calibre, was an absolute treat for us.Like the City of Dubai, which is known for creating records for the tallest, the biggest and the best, this production was no less than that!

The credit also goes to the team of The Ishara Puppet Theatre Trust that came down to UAE, including the Master craftsman and puppeteer Mr. Mohammed Shameen, the choreographer Mr. Avinash Kumar, assisted by Mr. Pawan Waghmare, Kumari Yadav and Mr. Vivek Kumar, all of whom you can see here.

We thank you Shri Dadi Pudumjee, Mr. & Mrs. Khambatta and the team of Ishara Trust for visiting Kebab Bistro for “Parsi khana” on Friday, January 15, 2016 and we look forward to serve you all once again in the UAE next year.

UNIMA stands for Union Internationale de la Marionnette – International Puppetry Association, which was founded in Prague in 1929 (then Czechoslovak).

The magazine Loutkář was UNIMA’s first official journal in years 1929-1930.

Dhanusha Gokulan has beautifully reviewed their production in Khaleej Times that we share here and thank her for giving credit where it is due.
